Crochet Collar Pattern

Crochet collar

This is deceptively easy to make if you have basic crochet skills and can easily be finished in an evening.

This pattern uses 2 ply light cotton cord and a 3.5mm crochet hook. You will also need a small shank button. Finished circumference will be around 13 1/4". The pattern is easily adaptable for different sizes and yarns. The starting chain is a multiple of 4 plus 2, so if you want it to be larger or smaller add or subtract 4 stitches until the chain fits comfortably around your neck and then follow pattern starting at row 1.

Ch 68

row 1: Sk 1 ch, sc in next ch and across, ch 3, turn
row 2: *Sk 1 sc, 2 dc in next sc, sk next sc, 1 dc in next sc, continue from * across, ch 3 turn
row 3: *2 dc, ch1, 2 dc in space between 2 dc, dc in next dc, continue from * across, ch 3 turn
row 4: *3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in ch space, dc in next dc, continue from * across, ch 3 turn

There are two options for the last row. If you want rounded edges as in the photos above, follow row 5 option A. If you want pointed edges, follow row 5 option B

row 5 option A: *8 dc in ch space, dc in next dc, continue from * across - do not turn
row 5 option B: *4 dc, ch 2, 4 dc in ch space, dc in next dc, continue from * across - do not turn

at the end of row 5, don't turn, sc down narrow edge of collar, 3 sc in corner, and sc across inner edge of collar to opposite corner, 3 sc in corner, sc down narrow edge and sl st into first dc. Break off and weave in ends.

Sew button to top corner. Attach yarn with sl st to opposite corner and chain approx 7 stitches (enough for button to go through snugly). Attach chain back to corner with a sl st, creating a loop. Fasten off, weave in ends.

If you try this and find any errors in the pattern, let me know so I can fix them! Also let me know if you need to see a photo demonstrating a particular step.

Wow it's so beautiful! I have very basic crochet knowledge, not nearly enough to understand a pattern. Thanks for sharing though :)

found my way here from Whip Up...wow, gorgeous collar. I have very, very...and I mean VERY, basic crochet, but I'm still gonna give it a go.

One question...what does "SK" mean?

Thanks!

Hey, this is such a gorgeous pattern, which I am totally in love with - can't wait to make my own. However, my crochet skills are...somewhat limited. I have done countless squares etc. but I am having a few difficulties deciphering the pattern.

I'm sure this is me being stupid, and not stopping to think about it carefully, but there we go.

I have managed to do the first two rows, but row three is causing me a few difficulties. First I do two double chain, then I chain one? I don’t quite understand what you mean by “2 dc in space between 2 dc, dc in next dc.” Also, in the next row, “3 dc in ch space” also confuses me =P

Sorry to be so annoying about this, and like I said it is my inability to competently read the pattern that is the issue. Any help is much appreciated.

Thank you
Arlecchino

Arlecchino: So if you are finished row 2, you should have little clusters of two DC stitches followed by one DC, followed by two etc. So at the start of row three you do two double crochet stitches in the space between the 2 DC cluster on row two (instead of into the top of the stitch), chain one, and then two more DC into the same space, making a little cluster of stitches all done in the same spot.

If you've done squares, this is almost exactly the same as doing increases to make a corner, except when you do it all the way across it curves into a necklace shape.

Then you do one DC into the top of the next DC on the previous row. And repeat...

If this still doesn't make sense I can post a few pics? let me know.

A friend of mine found, after her mother died, an unfinished cardigan. It was probably intended for my friend's son some 20 years ago. Now it's the perfect size for my friend's granddaughter, the knitter's great-granddaughter. I was very honored when she asked me to finish it for her. My friend's granddaughter loves pretty things and I am putting on the finishing touch with your collar pattern. I've looked through many patterns before finding just the one. Thanks for sharing.

I love this pattern. I used it as a gift this christmas and almost couldn't give it away. Finally got round to making one for myself, but as I don't like things being too tight around my neck I want to make it a bit bigger. I'm probably being a bit stupid, but in the intro you say the starting chain should be a multiple of 4 + 2, but the starting chain you use in the pattern is 68 which is a multiple of 4, but not plus 2...
